Brian
F. Smith and Associates can provide the entire range of
services imaginable regarding compliance issues for cultural
resources, including prehistoric sites, historic sites and
buildings, historic districts, and paleontological finds.
We have participated in a number of collaborative efforts
to produce environmental impact reports (EIRs), environmental
impact statements (EISs), initial studies, memorandum of understanding
(MOUs), memorandum of agreement (MOAs), mitigation programs,
preservation plans, and structure rehabilitation. The services
we commonly provide are:
- Cultural
resource survey reports for environmental compliance using the appropriate agency
guidelines
- Conformance
studies for NHPA Sections 106 and 110, and evaluations for
National Register eligibility
- Research
designs for archaeological investigations, including data recovery
- Statistical
analyses and computer applications
- Historical
properties analyses, architectural review, and preservation
plans

Paleontological services, including identification and museum preparation
- Archaeological and paleontological monitoring for construction projects
The capabilities
of the firm include a wide range of professional abilities
and company assets, including the following:
- Field
archaeological teams consisting of supervisors and trained
crews, equipped with all appropriate field tools and instruments,
including two- and four-wheel drive vehicles, transits and other surveying
equipment, Trimble GeoXT GPS unit, excavation screens, and radio communications.
We also have access to global positioning system equipment
for site location data.
- Knowledge
of procedures and equipment necessary to complete survey
excavations at sites in any terrain, including hydro-screening.
- Laboratory
facilities that permit the recording and analysis of recovered
artifacts, ecofacts, and paleontological specimens as well as the ability to curate all recovered
samples in a temperature controlled facility. Laboratory
equipment includes electronic scales, microscopes, computers,
light tables, and measuring and recording equipment.
- Technical
report production capabilities that include state-of-the-art
computers and software, scanners and plotters, laser printers
and copiers, graphics equipment, digital cameras, and a
production staff with over 20 years combined experience
in editing and graphics preparation for technical
reports.
